Patron: Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales

Sydney Monday 17 February 2025 - Battle for Australia Oration by Peter FitzSimons AM

The nineth annual Battle for Australia Oration was delivered at the Royal Automobile Club, Sydney. The Oration is held each year to mark the occasion in the Second World War when Prime Minister John Curtin coined the phrase "Battle for Australia" communicating to all Australians the dangers that lay ahead, following the Fall of Singapore.

The 2024 Battle for Australia Oration was presented by Peter FitzSimons AM @4:45. The presentation entitled "Australia's Battles" it covers the battles that honed Australia as a nation and people to the point where 1942-1945 the nation could be saved from foreign dominance.

Peter FitzSimons is a prolific writer and is one of Australia's best-selling non-fiction writers. He has written books about subjects such as Nancy Wake, the shipwreck of the Batavia, Sir John Monash, Breaker Morant, Charles Kingsford Smith and John Eales.

His books are graphic in expression. When you read them you feel you are with the men who left the trenches west of the Village of Le Hamel on 4 July 1918 in the full confidence that the shells striking the enemy trenches to their front this time, did not contain gas. When you view this presentation, you will not find it visually illustrated, Peter's graphic words are the experience.

Peter FitzSimons was named a Member of the Order of Australia in 2011 for service to literature as a biographer, sports journalist and commentator, and to the community through contributions to conservation, disability care, social welfare and sporting organisations.
